Overkill
Synopsis
Fresh out of prison, MORTIE finds starting over isn’t as easy as he’d hoped. His NYC apartment gone, his friends pressuring him to go back to his former life of petty crime, it’s hard to get jazzed about working at the Dairy Queen. When MADDIE, his old parole officer and ex-girlfriend, dumps him, it feels like the final nail in the coffin.
He takes a job offered by BONES, a scary emaciated dude with a baaaaaad attitude who’s got an inside scoop on some valuable coins owned by ROSITA HOUSTON, a church-going ghetto matriarch. It is Bones’ job to make sure the house is cleared as Mortie sneaks in and searches. But Rosita unexpectedly returns home. Mortie ties her up (comfortably,) and steals the coins in front of her.
But the coins have more value than Mortie had suspected. They’re the only precious things Rosita owns, and she was going to use them to get her son CURTIS off the streets and into college. Without the coins, Curtis may wind up gangbanging, stealing—kind of like Mortie. Rosita begs like a baby for Mortie to leave her the coins.
But Bones will kill Mortie if he doesn’t deliver. When Mortie packs the coins away into his valise, Rosita’s voice goes hard and cold—“You’re gonna die a thousand times for every coin you take from me.”
That’s when Mortie’s luck really starts to tank. He leaves the apartment, only to run into Curtis, enraged at what happened to Rosita. He escapes Curtis, only to be cornered by the police, who mistake a figurine in his hand for a gun. They shoot him, and he falls to his death from the apartment roof.
Only to wake up in the body of a deer on the highway, frozen in the headlights of a speeding truck— And again, in the ocean, far from shore-- And again, in the bed of an old man, mounted by his trophy wife. Mortie soon realizes he’s being inserted into bodies just before their fated end. He’s dying a thousand times, for every coin he took.
Mortie realizes something else-- Dying sucks. Fortunately for him, a lot of people die in New York, so when he winds up there, he figures out how to forestall the inevitable doom long enough to try to get the coins returned. His first effort ends in disaster, and death.
But his next effort puts him face to face with Maddie, out on the ledge of a building. Mortie has been plugged into a suicidal parolee. Mortie convinces Maddie who he is, and Maddie is so shocked, she falls from the ledge. Mortie saves her, sacrificing his own life; What the heck, he’s got plenty more.
As chances arise, Mortie contacts Maddie, and they hatch a plan to get the coins back. Finally, back in NYC, Mortie escapes the death of a SWAT cop, and meets Maddie at the pawn shop. They break in, preparing to take the coins--
But Curtis and Bones are already there. Curtis, bitter and angry over the injustice done to him, has turned from Rosita’s church teachings, and teamed up with Bones. Though Mortie only wants to get the coins back to Rosita, Maddie can’t let Curtis embrace a life of crime. Mortie stashes the coins, and backs Maddie up, holding an intervention for Curtis. But Bones pulls out a gun and starts firing. Mortie meets his end, and as he pulls away to his next incarnation, he sees Bones aim his gun at Maddie.
Convinced that Maddie is dead, Mortie plods through various deaths with weary submission. He returns the coins to Rosita, but by now Curtis is wanted for the murder of a SWAT cop, and her anger hasn’t ebbed. But then Mortie looks in the mirror during one of his deaths, and is stunned to see—Maddy! Still alive (good news,) but soon to die (bad news.)
Maddie had been saved by Curtis, who never wanted to kill anyone. Bones framed him for the Swat cop’s death, and now the police are preparing to storm Rosita’s apartment. Maddie wants to save Curtis, but Mortie wants to keep Maddie alive. As they struggle for control of Madie’s body, Mortie finally gives in.
At Rosita’s house, Mortie/Maddy sneak through the police cordon and into the apartment. Bones is there, holding Rosita and Curtis hostage. They rescue Curtis and Rosita and dispatch Bones, but not before taking a bullet themselves. Mortie spends his last breath convincing Rosita to forgive him. When she does, Mortie’s soul is pulled from Maddie’s body as she begins to recover.
Maddie mourns Mortie as she heals in the hospital. But there’s something familiar about the orderly. It’s Mortie, back one last time. Though he was cleared of the curse and able to “move on,” he finagled one final life to live with Maddie. Let’s hope he survives it.
